Well, it turns out my problem with the ELSE requiring a colon in front of it is not unusual.  In fact it is a requirement of every Microsoft BASIC that uses ELSE.  The tokenizer (cruncher) automatically inserts it into the code and the LIST command just hides it.  I was just unaware of this behavior.
